3. What is flexible working?

There are a number of different flexible working options, which include:

Flexible working hours or flexi-time arrangements

The usual pattern of flexible hours involves a core time during which all employees must be present, with flexibility at the beginning and end of the day. Arrangements may also include provision for employees to accumulate credit time or to exchange leave with hours worked in overtime.

Part-time work

Usually less than 30 hours per week.

Job-sharing

Allows the working week to be divided in a variety of ways, depending on the needs of both workers and employers. Workers may divide days or weeks or may work on alternate days or weeks. Work can be divided by task or by time, or by some combination of the two.

Home-based

Allows working from home, using communication and information technologies to remain in contact with clients and/or employers. It is often carried out in alternation with office-based work.

Contract work

Jobs are structured to be short term or temporary, and usually arise from an increased demand for a particular service or a product at a particular time. Particularly relevant to freelance/self-employed workers.

Annualised hours

Allows employees to contract to work a set number of hours per year and then agree with the employer on the actual distribution of hours by days, weeks, or seasons to fit their mutual convenience. This can include term-time working.

4. Will I have to register as self employed?

In some cases yes. It all depends on the role you take on, but some small employers, who are looking to fill short term project work will require their candidates to be responsible for their tax and NI contributions. It is a simple process to go through with no registration fees. More information on registering as self employed can be found at HM Revenues & Customs or Business Link

5. I don’t have children – can I still register?

Yes, the service is intended for anyone who wants to work part time or more flexibly, whether they have children or not.
